Bern's Angels

History

In honor of bernice carswell

Bernice Carswell, affectionately known as "Mrs Bernice". She was the ultimate nurturer with an unmatched spirit of love, kindness, and generosity to all those she encountered. The Lord gifted her with Godly wisdom, vision, and intelligence.

We say “Thank You” to this selfless servant who truly lived out the Scripture to “love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength with all your mind; and your neighbors as yourself “(Luke 10:27, NIV).

She was our "SHero" we are her Advocates.

She broke barriers in the community, serving as the first African American female umpire for baseball/softball, extensive stewardship as a softball coach and an advocate for promoting child recreation in the parks of the City of Jacksonville.

Her livelihood was altered when we noticed a slow progression of cognitive impairment. At first, we thought it was all part of the normal aging process. She began misplacing items, forgetting recent conversations and, over time, it progressed to loss of the ability to perform active daily tasks.   Our lives were forever changed when she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease.

In our new role, as family caregivers, we searched for educational information and resources about Alzheimer's Disease & Dementia. Through that research discovery, "Bern's Angel's” was birthed. Everyday life as we knew it became the "New Norm" as family became the full-time caregivers for our mother, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in 2013.

Bern’s Angels, Inc. is a non-profit 501 (c) (3) organization founded by three sisters who lost our mother, Bernice Carswell, to Alzheimer's/Dementia. Our organization is dedicated to facilitating fund raising activities to be donated for the causes of the National Alzheimer's Association that promote education, outreach, and research to cure this disease.  We believe providing proactive health and wellness education to facilitate Alzheimer’s awareness will contribute to whole and healthy communities.
